Therapy For College Students

North Carolina

The college years are a time of major transition. You’re figuring out who you are and what your future holds, starting a new chapter in life, and maybe living on your own for the first time.

1 in 4 college students has an undiagnosed mental health condition and 25% of college students have started therapy in the past year.

At Your Journey Through, we have multiple therapists who specialize in working with college students, because it is a population we are passionate about supporting. Our therapists are not only relatable, but also know their stuff.

College counseling centers often only offer 1-3 sessions per student and are not accessible outside of regular business hours. That’s where we step in.

We understand college students are already juggling academic demands and daily stressors. We want to make it easy to meet their mental health needs by offering flexible online scheduling and both in-person and virtual therapy appointments. This allows students to take part in their therapy sessions anywhere they feel comfortable.

If you’re a college student feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just not like yourself, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. Therapy is a supportive space where you can talk about what’s going on without judgment. Whether you’re struggling with something big or just need help navigating the day-to-day, we’re here to help you feel grounded, understood, and more in control.

Signs You Might Benefit From Counseling as a College Student

✔️ You feel overwhelmed often.
Balancing classes, deadlines, work, and social life feels unmanageable—and burnout is becoming your norm, not the exception.

✔️ You're struggling with motivation or focus.
Skipping classes, procrastinating, or zoning out even when you want to care. School feels like too much—or not worth it at all.

✔️ Your sleep or appetite has changed.
You’re sleeping too much or not enough, having trouble falling asleep, eating more or less than usual, or noticing unexplained physical symptoms.

✔️ You’ve been through a major change.
A breakup, loss, illness, or sudden shift in your life plans is hitting you harder than expected, and you’re unsure how to cope.

✔️ You’re constantly anxious or stressed.
Your mind won’t stop racing, even over small things. You feel on edge, tense, or constantly in “survival mode.”

✔️ You feel alone—even when you’re not.
You might be surrounded by people but still feel disconnected, homesick, or like no one really gets what you’re going through.

✔️ You’ve noticed a drop in your mental health.
Depression, anxiety, panic, or intrusive thoughts are getting in the way of your daily life or sense of self.

✔️ You're using unhealthy ways to cope.
Whether it’s drinking, self-isolating, overworking, or avoiding problems, you’re not sure how else to deal with what you’re feeling.

✔️ You want to work on yourself.
Even if you’re “okay,” you want to grow in confidence, learn to set boundaries, improve relationships, or build emotional resilience.

What to Expect in Your First Session

• A supportive space made for you.
The first session is all about helping you feel heard, respected, and safe. There’s no pressure to dive into everything at once—we’ll go at your pace and start wherever you’re most comfortable.

• We’ll talk about what’s been going on.
You’ll be invited to share what brought you in—whether it’s stress, anxiety, relationship issues, academic pressure, or just feeling stuck. You don’t need to have all the answers; we’ll figure it out together.

• Your counselor will guide the process.
Through thoughtful questions and conversation, your counselor will help you explore what’s going on and begin identifying what support might look like for you.

• It’s okay if you’re unsure or nervous.
This isn’t about “fixing” everything in one session. It’s completely normal to feel uncertain, emotional, or guarded at first. Counseling is a process—and we’re here to walk alongside you, not rush you.

• You’ll help shape your goals.
We’ll talk about what you’d like to get out of counseling—whether that’s building confidence, managing stress, improving relationships, or just understanding yourself better.

• You’ll leave with a sense of what’s next.
Before you go, we’ll review some initial insights and options for moving forward—whether through continued sessions, tools to try, or referrals if needed.

 Frequently Asked Questions

College can bring incredible growth—but also big stressors. Counseling is a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can explore challenges, gain insight, and develop strategies for thriving both academically and personally. Here are some of the most common questions students have.

  • Not at all. Many students come to counseling to talk through stress, make a decision, or simply have a safe space to reflect. You don’t need to hit a breaking point to benefit from support.

  • Anything that’s on your mind—anxiety, loneliness, academic pressure, identity questions, relationships, grief, or simply feeling stuck. No issue is too “small” or unimportant.

  • Yes. What you share in counseling stays between you and your counselor, with a few exceptions for safety concerns. You can talk openly without fear of judgment or it being shared.

  • That’s okay. You don’t need to come with a script. Our therapists are trained to guide the conversation and help you feel comfortable, even if you’re unsure where to start.

  • Absolutely. Counseling can help you untangle procrastination, perfectionism, or burnout, and build realistic strategies for staying focused and grounded through the semester.

  • That’s valid, and you can talk about that here too. At Your Journey Though, we aim to create a collaborative, respectful space where your voice is centered—and where healing from past experiences is possible.
